Tour de Perth 2026

8–13 August 2026

Tour de Perth 2026

Some cycling trips are remembered for the places you visit. Others are remembered for the people you ride with, the unexpected moments along the way, and the stories that only make sense once you have experienced them together.

The Ultimate Perth 2026 turned out to be a little bit of both.

From 8 to 13 August, 42 riders travelled across Perth and its coastal surroundings, with four days of cycling covering a total of 148 kilometres. For six participants, this was also their first time taking part in an overseas cycling trip, making the journey an exciting experience from the very beginning.

The first few rides were exactly what everyone had imagined when they signed up for a coastal cycling adventure in Perth. The weather was cool, the roads were enjoyable, and the coastline provided plenty of beautiful views along the way. Riding through Perth at a relaxed pace gave everyone time to take in the city, the ocean and the scenery around them.

But Perth had a surprise waiting for us even before the first ride properly got underway. Just as the group was preparing to head out on the first day, a sudden hailstorm came down heavily, bringing an unexpected chill to the air. For everyone in the group, it was their first time experiencing hail like this while getting ready to ride. What had started as an exciting first day quickly became a memorable introduction to Perth's unpredictable weather.

The Bromptons also attracted plenty of attention from locals. With 42 riders travelling together on small-wheeled folding bikes, it was difficult to go unnoticed. Friendly greetings and curious looks followed the group along the coastal roads, with many locals clearly surprised to see just how far those little wheels could take us.

By the third day, Perth had another weather lesson in store for us.

Heavy rain came down as the group continued along the route, turning what had been a comfortable coastal ride into a much tougher challenge. After already experiencing hail on the first day, nobody was quite expecting the weather to become even more dramatic. This time, the rain was heavy enough to leave everyone soaked and make the climbs feel even harder.

The rain was not the only problem either. Over the course of the trip, the group experienced six flat tyres, including several that had to be dealt with while everyone was already soaked from the downpour.

Stopping to repair a tyre is never particularly exciting. Doing it in heavy rain, while tired and cold, is even less so.

But these were also the moments when the group really came together. Riders waited for one another, helped where they could and kept the mood going despite the weather. Nobody had planned for a ride quite like this, but once everyone was back on the bikes, the adventure continued.

There was even a little bit of unexpected navigation along the coastal route, with the group getting lost at one point. With 42 riders involved, a wrong turn can quickly become a group discussion, but eventually everyone found the way forward and carried on.

And perhaps that is what made the trip memorable. Not everything went perfectly, but everyone experienced it together.

Of course, there were still plenty of lighter moments along the way. Steven Lee from Malaysia quickly established himself as one of the fastest riders in the group, while JBL Shirleen Goh, our photographer, was constantly busy capturing the journey from behind the camera.

While everyone else was focused on riding, Shirleen was making sure there would be plenty of memories to look back on afterwards.

Off the bikes, Perth offered its own rewards. The group enjoyed a mix of Western-style favourites, including scones and muffins, while the famously generous serving of fish and chips became one of the memorable food stops of the trip.

The modern architecture of Perth and the city's beautiful coastal surroundings also gave everyone plenty to enjoy between rides.

For the six participants experiencing overseas cycling for the first time, the trip probably turned out to be very different from what they had imagined. Instead of simply enjoying four days of easy coastal riding, they experienced sunshine, rain, flat tyres, wrong turns and the occasional struggle of keeping going when the weather was working against them.

Yet by the end, everyone had made it through.

Looking back, the heavy rain and the unexpected hailstorm may have been uncomfortable at the time, but they also became part of the story. From experiencing hail for the first time before the very first ride to changing flat tyres in a heavy downpour, the weather gave the group a few moments that certainly were not in the itinerary. The same goes for the flat tyres, the wrong turns and the tired moments along the way. These are the things that turn a cycling trip from a simple itinerary into something worth remembering.

After all, the best trips are rarely the ones where everything goes exactly according to plan.

Sometimes, they are the ones where you get a little lost, stop in the rain to fix a tyre, laugh about it afterwards, and eventually arrive at the finish line together.

For 42 riders in Perth, those 148 kilometres became much more than a coastal ride. They became six days of new places, shared experiences and plenty of stories to bring home.

Perth gave us the roads, the coastline and the weather. The riders gave the journey its story. 🚲🇦🇺
