Xiamen is a city where history meets the sea, and modern life flows at a relaxed coastal pace. From centuries-old cultural landmarks to some of China’s most impressive cycling infrastructure, this coastal city is perfectly suited for exploration. Especially with a Brompton.


Our Xiamen Cycling Adventure is a thoughtfully curated journey that blends sightseeing, culture, and riding, designed for riders who enjoy discovery as much as the ride itself.


Day 1: Stepping Into History -  Gulangyu Island 🌿


The adventure begins with a visit to Gulangyu Island, a car-free island just off the coast of Xiamen. While we don’t cycle here, this leisurely exploration sets the tone for the journey ahead.


Once an important international settlement during the late Qing Dynasty, Gulangyu reflects Xiamen’s past as a key trading port. European-style villas, historic churches, and traditional Chinese homes sit side by side, telling stories of cultural exchange and maritime heritage. With no traffic noise, it’s a peaceful introduction to the city. Perfect for soaking in history, architecture, and island charm before the riding begins.


Day 2 Onwards: Xiamen by Brompton


Cycling officially starts the next day, and Xiamen quickly proves why it’s considered one of China’s most bike-friendly cities.


We begin with the Xiamen Round Island Ride, cruising along coastal roads with uninterrupted sea views and refreshing ocean breeze. This route showcases the city’s deep connection to the sea and its reputation as “The Garden on the Sea.”


One of the most exciting highlights is the Sky Bike Path, an elevated cycling highway built exclusively for cyclists. Floating above the city, this futuristic route offers smooth riding, panoramic views, and a completely car-free experience that feels uniquely Xiamen.


Riding Through Culture & Modern Landmarks 🏛️

Our journey continues through Xiamen University, often regarded as one of the most beautiful campuses in China. Cycling through its leafy avenues, historic buildings, and seaside surroundings feels calm, scenic, and inspiring.


We then roll along the Xiamen Coastal Cycling Path and Sea Bike Path, where urban energy gives way to relaxed seaside cruising. These stretches are ideal for easy riding, photo stops, and enjoying the rhythm of coastal life.


From the Xiamen Bridge Viewing Platform, we pause to take in sweeping views of the city skyline and waterways — a striking contrast between old-world heritage and modern development.


At Jimei Chen Jia Ken Memorial Park, we explore the legacy of Tan Kah Kee, a respected philanthropist whose contributions shaped education and architecture in the region. The area reflects strong cultural roots and civic pride, offering a deeper understanding of Xiamen beyond the city centre.


A Special Experience for Brompton Riders 🔧

A unique highlight of the trip is the SMC Factory Visit, where we gain insight into advanced manufacturing and precision engineering. It’s a fascinating behind-the-scenes experience that connects innovation, industry, and the engineering mindset shared by Brompton riders.
