The Brompton Replacement Front Wheel Axle Fittings (Standard) is a replacement hardware kit designed for Brompton bicycles equipped with traditional steel forks and standard front wheel assemblies. Although compact in size, these components play an essential role in securing the front wheel and maintaining proper wheel alignment.
The kit typically includes an M8 axle bolt, retaining nut, tabbed safety washers, and associated hardware. The tabbed washers are particularly important, as they engage with the locating slots in the fork dropouts to help maintain correct wheel positioning during installation. Proper assembly and tightening according to Brompton service specifications are recommended to ensure safe and reliable operation.
Product Overview & Component Breakdown
This standard axle fitting kit is designed for non-superlight (all-steel) forks and standard Brompton front wheels.
What’s Included in the Kit:
A standard replacement kit includes axle hardware, lock washers and retaining nuts that must be installed in a very specific order:
Component | Quantity | Purpose |
M8 Axle Bolt | 1 | The main threaded bolt that passes through the hub axle. |
Lock Nut M8 | 2 | Secures the opposite side of the axle bolt. |
Tabbed Lock Washers | 2 | Crucial safety washers that lock into the fork dropouts. |
Flat Washer | 1 | Placed under the nut to distribute clamping force. |

Visual Reference & Identification Guide
When looking at the authentic Brompton Standard Axle Fitting Kit, pay attention to these three distinct visual markers:
The "Tabbed" Washers (Safety Hooks): The two identical washers are not perfectly round. They feature a distinct protruding metal "tab" or hook on one side. These tabs are designed to slot directly into the small safety holes just above the fork dropouts.
Hexagonal Nut Profile: The outer locking nut is a heavy-duty, standard 15mm hexagon nut.
Black or Silver Coating: Depending on the manufacturing year of your Brompton, the hardware will either have a bright zinc-plated silver finish or a stealthy black-oxide finish.
Assembly Order (Crucial for Safety)
Incorrect Installation Risk:
Installing the tabbed washers backward or leaving them out entirely can cause the front wheel to align crookedly, rubbing against the brake pads or mudguard, or worse, may affect wheel alignment and retention security.
Correct Installation Sequence:
Push the main Axle Bolt through the hub from one side.
Slide one Tabbed Washer onto each side of the protruding axle ends. The tabs must face inward toward the fork and hook securely into the safety recesses of the fork dropouts.
On the threaded exit side, place the Flat Washer over the axle thread.
Thread the Lock Nut onto the axle by hand.
Use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 15Nm.

Key Visual Details Highlighted in the Image:
The Tabbed Safety Washer: Notice the distinct protruding metal "tab" or hook on the edge of the circular washer. This is the single most important safety component—the tab must slot securely into the dedicated safety recess on your steel fork dropout to prevent the wheel from spinning loose.
The 15mm Hex Locking Nut: This is the heavy-duty outer nut that secures the entire assembly. You will need a standard 15mm spanner, wrench, or socket to tighten this to the factory-recommended torque spec.
The Main Axle Skewer Bolt: This is the long, threaded bolt that feeds entirely through the center of your standard Brompton front hub.
The Flat Washer: This sits directly underneath the 15mm hex nut to distribute the clamping force evenly and protect the tabbed washer from being warped or scratched during tightening.
