Brompton Advance Rear Mudguard Roller Wheel

Updated: May 4

The Brompton Advance Rear Mudguard Roller Wheel is a tiny but essential component specifically engineered for the new Brompton models.

Unlike the standard mudguard wheels found on the MK5 C Line, this "Advance" version is designed to work with the advance rear frame and the unique Advance Mudguard system. It ensures that when you fold your bike (without a rack), it remains stable and can be "trolled" smoothly.

Detailed Component Breakdown

1. Minimalist Wheel Profile

The Advance roller is notably smaller and narrower than the classic version. This is intentional to save weight and to fit the sleeker profile of the Advance rear mudguard. It features a hard-wearing plastic tread designed to handle city pavements.

2. The Reinforced Mounting Plate

Because the Advance mudguard is made of a lighter composite, the roller wheel comes with a specific internal reinforcement plate. This plate "sandwiches" the mudguard material, preventing the wheel from cracking the mudguard under the weight of the bike when folded.

3. Stability Without a Rack

On a "Version L" Brompton (mudguards, no rack), this wheel acts as the third point of contact with the ground. The Advance version is positioned to provide the best possible balance for the lighter P/T Line frames, which have a slightly different center of gravity than the steel C Line.

Installation & Pro-Tips

1. Don't Over-tighten

The mounting bolt goes through the composite mudguard. Tighten it until it is firm, but do not crush the plastic. If you feel the mudguard deforming, stop immediately.

2. Cleaning the Axle

Because this wheel sits very low to the ground, it attracts hair and road grime. Periodically spray a little bit of silicone lubricant into the axle to keep it spinning freely.

3. Compatibility Warning

If you decide to upgrade to the Advance Rear Rack, you will remove this wheel. The rack comes with its own larger (66mm) wheels, and this mudguard roller is not used in conjunction with the rack setup.

Key Visual Features:

Compact Dimensions: Notice how small and narrow this wheel is compared to the rollers on a C Line or those mounted on a rear rack. It is designed for absolute minimum weight.

Black Plastic Housing: The wheel is encased in a dark plastic bracket that is curved specifically to follow the profile of the Advance rear mudguard.

Single Mounting Screw: You will see a single main bolt that secures the entire roller assembly directly through the mudguard blade.

Functional Positioning: When the bike is unfolded, the wheel sits at the highest point of the mudguard. Once the bike is fully folded, it becomes a crucial "foot" that supports the bike's weight.
