The Advance 4-Speed Shifter with Integrated Brake Lever is a pinnacle of Brompton’s "Superlight" engineering. Originally developed for the P Line and later the T Line, this component was designed to be as light as possible while managing the precise shifting required for the external 4-speed drivetrain.
Unlike the classic 2 or 3-speed shifters found on the C Line, this is a trigger-style shifter that offers a much more tactile, modern "click" feel.

Detailed Component Breakdown
1. Integrated Ergonomics
The shifter and brake lever are a single, unified unit. This saves weight by eliminating a second handlebar clamp and creates a "clean" cockpit look. The brake lever is a long-pull design, optimized for the dual-pivot rim brakes (P/T Line) or the specific requirements of the G Line.
2. Precise Trigger Action
Thumb Lever: Used for downshifting (moving to a larger sprocket/easier gear).
Release Button: A crisp, spring-loaded button for upshifting (moving to a smaller sprocket/faster gear).
Optical Indicator: Unlike older shifters, this usually lacks a "window" to save weight, relying instead on rider feel and derailleur position.
3. The "Advance" Derailleur Synergy
This shifter is specifically indexed to pull the exact amount of cable required for the Brompton Advance Derailleur. It will not work with internal hub gears (like the Sturmey Archer 3-speed) because the "pull ratio" (the distance the cable moves per click) is completely different.
Visual References & Identification
The Profile: Look for the slim, sleek black body. It sits much closer to the grip than the older "under-bar" shifters.
The "4" Markings: On the body of the shifter, you will see subtle numbering or indexing dots indicating the four gear positions.
Cable Port: There is a dedicated barrel adjuster located where the cable exits the shifter. This allows you to fine-tune your shifting tension while riding.
Brake Reach Adjuster: There is a small 2mm or 2.5mm hex screw inside the lever blade that allows you to move the brake lever closer to the handlebar for riders with smaller hands.
Maintenance & Installation Tips
[!IMPORTANT]
Cable Tension is Key: The 4-speed system has very tight tolerances. If your shifting feels "crunchy," use the barrel adjuster on the shifter to add or release tension in half-turn increments.
Compatibility Warning: You cannot use this shifter on a C Line 6-speed or 3-speed. Those bikes use internal hubs that require a "long-pull" shifter. This is exclusively for the external 4-speed derailleur.
Torque: When mounting to the handlebar, do not exceed 3-5 Nm. Over-tightening can crack the composite housing.
Cleaning: Avoid spraying high-pressure water directly into the shifter mechanism. Use a damp cloth and a drop of dry lube on the pivot points if the trigger feels sticky.

Visual Identification Guide:
Integrated Design: Notice how the brake lever and shifting mechanism share a single handlebar clamp. This "2-in-1" construction is what keeps the weight down and the cockpit clean.
The Trigger Mechanism: There is a large thumb paddle (usually for downshifting to easier gears) and a smaller release trigger or button (for upshifting to faster gears).
Matte Black Finish: The body is made of high-strength composite with a matte finish, designed to match the aesthetics of the P Line and T Line components.
The Barrel Adjuster: Look for the black plastic screw where the gear cable exits. This is your primary tool for indexing your 4-speed derailleur.
